Participation in Practice

Participation has been a principle in youth work for many years. In Northern Ireland, it is one of the three core principles as outlined in the Department of Education’s document; ‘Youth Work – A Model for Effective Practice’ (revised 2003). The Northern Ireland Youth Work Strategy (2005-08) lists participation as one of the four central areas to be developed. The strategy indicates that participation can take place in a number of dimensions.

  • The development of individual capabilities and confidence
  • Participation in local communities or communities of interest
  • Participation in decision making in the youth service
  • Participation in the development of public policy

Youth workers and youth work organisations have developed various programmes, structures and strategies to facilitate young people’s participation.

If you would like to add an example of participatory practice in youth work you can discuss this with the Curriculum Development Officers in the unit. They can provide guidance of possible content and format.
