  • Delivering training

  • Providing support resources

  • Providing access to additional copies of the document

  • Enhancing the use and clarity of the curriculum by developing additional thematic guidelines

Youth Work – a model for effective practice' was updated in January 2003. It is often referred to as the Northern Ireland Youth Work Curriculum. The document outlines the central theme and core principles of effective youth work. The document is an update of the original document published in 1997.

The updated model is not intended to lead to a single, prescriptive and inflexible curriculum framework. Rather it should be viewed as a framework within which there is scope to develop approaches best suited to the age range, context and issues in which young people are engaged.

The model outlines three core principles that underpin the personal and social development of young people:

  • Preparation for participation

  • Testing, values and beliefs

  • Promotion of acceptance and understanding of others.

The model also outlines a cycle of actions and engagements with young people that will ensure that they have an active part in the planning, shaping and delivery of their own programmes, in reviewing their effectiveness and relevance, and changing or developing them based on reflection and evaluation.
